ORTHODONTICS / DENTAL ALIGNMENT / INVISALIGN

Orthodontics is the specialty of Dental Medicine that treats malocclusion, that is, problems with tooth alignment and dentofacial disharmony.

Correct dental alignment and positioning are a determining factor in the health of your teeth and gums, with a great impact on the appearance of your smile. Incorrect positioning of teeth has a strong influence on their durability due to erroneous wear patterns that can accelerate the loss of tooth structure through wear or fracture.

The fact that teeth are misaligned prevents them from being easily cleaned and can cause problems with the gums and tooth-supporting tissues (periodontitis, gum recession, etc.).

Orthodontic correction is often essential to correct problems in the temporomandibular joint, postural problems, headaches and muscle pain.

Did you know that a large number of adults report self-esteem problems and difficulty smiling openly in public or in photographs?

Orthodontic correction can allow you to smile with confidence again, preserving your teeth in good health for many years.

There are several types of appliances depending on the malocclusion to be corrected and the patient’s age.

The Oral Lab has a lot of experience in orthodontic treatment for children and adults, offering the most innovative techniques such as Invisalign, the invisible aligners that correct the positioning of teeth quickly and practically imperceptibly.

Other dento-facial orthopedic appliances, fixed metallic and aesthetic appliances and palate expansions are other resources in this type of treatment, which is always intended to be as conservative as possible.

SURGERY

Complex tooth extractions/ wisdom teeth

Teeth indicated for extraction may require surgical extraction. Due to its location close to vital anatomical structures such as blood vessels or nerves or the shape or orientation of the tooth, surgery can be complex.

The way to minimize risks in this type of surgery is to invest time in planning and preparing for the surgery. Part of the planning is done through the analysis of imaging exams such as orthopantomography and computed tomography (CBCT), which allows us to see in detail and three-dimensionally the relationship between the tooth and the vital structures to be preserved.

The considered and precise surgical technique, as well as scrupulous compliance with the recommended post-operative care, minimize the associated risks.

Wisdom teeth typically erupt between the ages of 17 and 19. Most of the time there is not enough space for its complete eruption, creating numerous complications in the medium term, such as inflammation, dental crowding, maxillary cysts, injuries to adjacent roots, etc., making it convenient to extract it before complications arise.

There are clear indications for its removal:

  • Lack of space with incomplete eruption causing recurrent episodes of acute inflammation
  • Poor positioning can compromise neighboring teeth due to their eruption axis
  • The impossibility of being restored due to incorrect positioning and difficult access
  • The fact that they promote crowding of the remaining teeth due to lack of space
  • This type of extractions require a lot of experience so that the surgery is minimally invasive and provides the best possible post-operative period.

At The Oral Lab you can count on surgeons with a vast CV and a lot of experience in this type of interventions and find the confidence and security you need.

Most common surgical procedures in oral surgery:

Removal of cysts and benign lesions from the oral cavity

Implant explantation

Frenectomies

Bone regeneration

Maxillary sinus elevation

PERIODONTOLOGY

The area of dentistry dedicated to the study and treatment of diseases related to the supporting tissues of the teeth is periodontology.

Diseases of the gums and tooth support can lead to the loss of one, several, or all teeth.

The most common warning signs are bleeding during brushing, tooth mobility, hypersensitivity to cold and the opening of spaces between the teeth.

Periodontal problems can also be detected in a routine radiographic examination. In addition to controlling predisposing systemic factors and habits that potentiate and precipitate the disease, treatment is local.

As a general rule, treatment consists of a prior consultation with an Oral Hygienist, a complete periodontal evaluation, a hygienic phase with decontamination of bacterial deposits, a reevaluation of the results obtained and surgical treatment of areas still uncontrolled with possible reconstruction of periodontal tissues lost due to illness.

Previous augmentation of soft tissues and treatment of overload on some teeth may be part of the general treatment.

Gums are to your smile like a frame is to a painting. Healthy gums are an essential component of a smile, contributing significantly to the youthful and well-kept appearance of your mouth.

Short teeth and excess visible gums (gummy smile) are corrected by periodontal procedures that aim to make the smile more harmonious. Just as it is possible to make teeth longer, very long teeth can also be corrected by covering the exposed area of the tooth, which often has an unsightly appearance and can cause tooth sensitivity.

PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY

Pediatric Dentistry is the specialty of Dental Medicine that studies and promotes oral health in children and adolescents. Maintaining the integrity, health and functions of the first set of teeth until the period of natural exfoliation is one of the fundamental objectives of Pediatric Dentistry.

Children are not small adults and therefore, they need a specific and appropriate approach, both from a technical and behavioral point of view. Knowing how to communicate with them at each stage of their development is the way to be able to carry out treatments that are often complex and challenging.

Baby teeth are very important for chewing, phonetics and aesthetics, preserving the space necessary for the correct development and positioning of permanent teeth.

They also have a significant influence on the growth of the bone structures that support them, thus affecting the entire development of the child until adulthood.

The premature loss of baby teeth has adverse consequences for the child; changes in aesthetics with consequences for self-esteem, changes in speech, and even occlusal imbalances that can only be corrected with the use of orthopedic and/or orthodontic appliances.

Prevention is our first line of intervention, ensuring problem-free growth at a stage that can be decisive for oral health in adulthood. Preventing cavities is more effective than treating them, which is why cleaning, applying fissure sealants and fluoride are common procedures in a consultation for this specialty.

Counseling children and parents regarding hygiene habits to be implemented at each age and eating habits, establishing good foundations for healthy growth, is a fundamental complement to the necessary clinical procedures.

In this consultation, the child will be monitored based on the risk they present for various diseases of the oral cavity, evaluating their development, detecting problems early so that solutions become simpler and more effective.

At the Pediatric Dentistry consultation we treat our patients in a relaxed environment, so the vast majority of treatments are carried out in the office environment without anxiety or pain.

There are, however, exceptional situations in which, for reasons of safety and complexity, treatments will be carried out using advanced anesthesia techniques that are equally safe. We can use conscious sedation or general anesthesia to avoid traumatic treatments for the child.

These techniques are used equally in the treatment of children and adults with special needs.

Our pediatric dentist has a lot of experience in treating patients with disabilities and is a professor at the Faculty of Dental Medicine. She has extensive experience in treatment in the operating room and with general anesthesia and also has considerable experience with conscious sedation.

ENDODONTIC

Root canal treatments

This is the treatment commonly known as devitalization. It consists of obtaining access to the inside of the tooth, in order to promote disinfection and sealing of the root canal system. It is a treatment that relieves pain, swelling and treats tooth infection, allowing its future rehabilitation instead of extraction.

PROSTHODONTICS

Prosthodontics is the area of dentistry that aims to rehabilitate or maintain the patient’s oral function by restoring chewing, aesthetics and phonetics. The most common restorative procedures are crowns, veneers or dental prosthetics on teeth or implants.
